DAY 2 - History & Wine

After enjoying breakfast, it's "All Aboard!" as you experience a nostalgic ride on the historic Niles Canyon Railway, a railway museum where the exhibits come to life.  In 1869, four months after the famous golden spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah, the Central Pacific Railroad completed the transcontinental rail link between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay, finishing the track at Niles Canyon.  Your hour-long journey on a vintage train will travel along the original Transcontinental Railroad Route, stopping at the historic Niles District where you will disembark your train to enjoy a tour of the Essanay Silent Film Museum, a tribute to the pioneers of the silent movie industry.

In 1913, the world's first movie cowboy "Bronco Billy" Anderson and a partner opened the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company at the site to produce silent film shorts featuring the leading film stars of the day, including Charlie Chaplin.  After your museum visit, take a brief stroll along Niles Boulevard for some window-shopping before hopping back on your train for return passage to the Sunol Station.

Your final taste of Livermore Valley Wine Country will be a visit to majestic Elliston Vineyards.  Offering a unique and picturesque atmosphere, the winery estate with its Historic Stone Mansion and acres of vineyards is sure to provide an enjoyable and memorable experience.  Enjoy a picnic or buffet lunch at the winery before heading to your next Northern California  destination - perhaps San Francisco (35 miles), Sacramento (88 miles),  or Monterey (95 miles)!
