Temecula, California -- Outlaws hiding in the valley and surrounding mountains in Southern California's Temecula Valley always knew there "was gold in those hills" but it took up until July 10, 2008 for South Coast Winery to strike gold and in a big way.

That is, the prestigious, bear-shaped Golden Bear Winery trophy from the 150+ year old California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition went to South Coast Winery as the winery for fielding the greatest number of award-winning wines in the 2008 annual fair competition. This 10-pound prized trophy is the symbol of California and adds the little known wine region to the Hall of Wine Producing Fame.

The California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition is the oldest and most prestigious wine competition in North America. In fact, the state's website calls it "the authentic granddaddy of American wine competitions."

First held in 1855, it is, by far, the oldest wine competition limited to vitis vinifera grapes in America, and trade publications credit it as the premier competition in America through 1967. Each year, thousands of California wines are entered into the competition for the chance to win one of many coveted awards. All told, South Coast Winery brought in 39 such awards from this competition including the Gold Bear, 1 Best of State, 1 Best of Region, 12 Best of Class, 1 Double Gold, and 5 Golds, to name a few.

"It's an honor to have South Coast Winery recognized as an outstanding wine producer among its peers of California Wineries. I'm on top of the world right now, but I didn't do it alone. I simply set the goal to create the finest wines in all of California; then provided our incredibly talented winemakers with the tools they needed to accomplish our joint mission. The three of us - Jon McPherson, Javier Flores, and myself -- did it really. By combining their skills, with my quality vineyards, adding in some hard work, and a lot of heart, we have created the best wines in the golden state of California." says a smiling Jim Carter, owner/vintner for the four-year old winery also home to the luxurious South Coast Winery Resort & Spa.

"This marks the beginning for our winery in particular and the Southern California Temecula Valley Wine Region as a whole to be recognized as a fine wine producing area, and I accept this award on behalf of all of us."

South Coast Winery produces a broad portfolio of premium wines that are 100% grown and produced with care under his tutelage in Southern California's up and coming Temecula Valley Wine Country. Over the course of the first five years of its production, the winery has received over 500 awards and medals from both regional and international wine competitions.

The winery graces the grounds of South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, a 38-acre destination property located in the heart of Temecula's Wine Country at 34843 Rancho California Road, Temecula, California and also has a restaurant and tasting room in Orange County California, and both can be found online at
