So special congratulations are definitely in order to Wente Vineyards as it celebrates more than a hundred years longer than that. The 125th anniversary celebration is taking place throughout 2008, but in May things really heat up. Numerous events are slated to commemorate Wente's status as the country's oldest continuously operated family-owned winery.

The Wente family is now in its fourth and fifth generation of management, and it's worth noting that recently the vineyard, its wines, and all of the ancillary offerings from the Livermore winery have reached its stride. Drawing on decades of experience and family-honored tradition, Wente has achieved a deft mix of traditional and leading-edge winemaking practices, to coax ever-improving wines from its 3,000 acres of sustainably farmed estate vineyards. The winery has also nearly single-handedly put Livermore on the winemaking map.

Fittingly, the Wente 125 celebration gets underway in earnest the weekend of May 3 and 4, when the Livermore Valley Wine Festival takes place in downtown Livermore. Wente will be host of the festival's "lifestyle pavilion" in which guests can enjoy tastings, attend seminars, and peruse educational information about the growth of the wine region and Wente's role in it. The same weekend, Wente will hold its 125th Anniversary Weekend Jazz Celebration at the winery's onsite restaurant. All of the planned festivities not only acknowledge the milestone anniversary, they point out the significant role Wente has had in shaping modern day California Wine Country. For instance, Wente was among the first to offer a restaurant--making the food and wine connection--and among the first to create a live music concert series--making the inextricable connection between wine and the good life (today, one of Northern California's best golf courses is also here).

So while the winery has indeed come a long way since CH Wente emigrated from Germany and planted 47 acres in the East Bay, really they are still holding true to Wente family values more than a century later.

"green" and "eco-friendly" trends bandied about these
days, who is just talking and who is actually doing. There's no other way
to be green than to do, and so I think it's important to give a "shout
out" to those who are actually trying to make a difference. In Napa, the
list of the former is large and growing all the time. And at the Silverado
Resort (one of my personal favorites, thanks to the perfect melding of
excellent wine, food, and golf), is now upping the sustainability ante with
their recently implemented practice of comprehensive recycling.

In the past six months, according to the resort, Silverado
has reduced its garbage total by half, through an all-inclusive program of
recycling, waste diversion, and composting. The resort is now recycling
everything from grass clippings (which are considerable) to food scraps (also
plentiful), in additional to the typical practice of recycling such things as
plastics and paper. The resort's environmental programs also include such
things as using renewable paper products and supplying housekeepers with
sustainable cleaning solutions. The resort also uses a state-of-the-art
water-saving irrigation system to maintain its two golf courses.

"We do everything
we can to reduce waste - from buying products from local producers to
offering meat and seafood that is harvested using the most sustainable
practices available," said long-time executive chef Peter Pahk.
"Recycling food scraps is fairly new, and it is a logistical challenge,
so we are absolutely delighted the program is showing such encouraging results
after only six months."

I offer kudos to Pahk and to the Silverado Resort, for
understanding sustainability may not be easy to achieve, but once the practices
are in place, they become not part of a trend but a way of life. For more,

topic.

It was
announced recently that ExpressJet Airlines will offer as part of their
in-flight beverage assortment cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley and sauvignon
blanc from Lake County--served in single-portion boxes from Chameleon
Cellars. This means that for the low $3 price per box, passengers aboard one of
the world's largest operators of regional planes, with connector and
commuter flights in the Southeast and Western U.S., can enjoy the fine wine
experience en route to their next board meeting. How can you go wrong with
that? Well, I suppose you could show up to the board meeting with a red-toothed
grin, but that's another issue.

But even
better with this story, is that aboard ExpressJet flights, your wine order
comes complete with cheese and crackers and gourmet sandwiches and wraps. That
sounds more like a California picnic than a business-minded flight from Austin
to Ontario. I know something about what the air inside an airplane at 30,000 feet
does to wine - from tannins to finish, but that's another topic for
another day. For now, I salute ExpressJet and their efforts to air travel well,
and to use wine as a means for doing so.

Winery is an absolutely gorgeous venue, replete with a center courtyard
that gives way to views of the vineyards and barrel chaix. My friends

proposal) in such lavish settings sans the gravel parking lot. Note to
self: bring an extra pair of walking shoes so as to not break neck in 3
inch heels!

crowd favorites. Sharing a table with a couple hailing from New York,
we soon became fast friends comparing and advising which food stations
not to miss and those to approach with caution. If you were unable to
attend and savor such delectable bites yourself, I recommend going to
the restaurant behind the fame or letting the company cater your next

Nor would anyone peg them as typical wine country cuisine or beverage.
However, tucked away in a corner of Jacuzzi's vineyard vistas, I am so
glad we did not turn up our noses at what most might term "fluff
coffee". Starbucks has returned to their roots - good ol' fashioned
fresh roasted coffee. Just this week, they launched their newest coffee

Farmer

Once upon a time I went to the movies four times a week. Now, I never go. No exaggeration - four times a week. And seriously - never. These days, if it doesn't come to my house via a little red envelope in my mail, I don't see it. I still see all the good ones, but it's never at the movie theater. It wasn't always like that. I used to be at the theater more days than I wasn't.

Let me explain: I wasn't so much a rabid cinephile or a serial dater as
I was a young cub writer, whose early beat happened to be film and
music. So when I wasn't checking out the latest band or new CD, I was
in a dark theater seeing nearly every movie that the studios cared to
release. I got into it. And I became, after all, a rabid cinephile.

I do sometimes miss those days. But I'll take these days of Netflix and
a comfy couch any day - especially since now that I have a
four-month-old daughter I literally cannot go to the movies.

And so it was with great pleasure that I learned this year's Sonoma Valley Festival, the 11th iteration of the great Wine Country film event, will actually be kid friendly--nearly unheard of on the film festival circuit. The SVFF this year features child care for the parents who just want to break away for a few hours and enjoy the festival "adult" style. The service, which is offered for the unheard of price (in babysitter world) of $8 per hour, will make sure kids are well taken care of while the parents are tucked watching festival fare. The program, called Kid Zone, is designed with a movie-going theme as well, ensuring your youngster gets the cinematic background he or she so craves.

On Saturday and Sunday during the festival, kids can join in Movie Magic Day, an interactive diversion that will guide them through the process of movie making, from storyboarding to directing to editing. Of course, for the Stars in the Making among the group, there is acting involved, too. Movie Magic is just part of the day care service, which also includes activities for kids such as karaoke, arts and crafts, and age-appropriate (natch!) movies.

Meanwhile, grownups attending festival can enjoy an impressive lineup of films and special events--the likes of which have placed Sonoma high on the film festival circuit hierarchy. Included this year are some 75 new independent full-length features, shorts, and documentaries featuring acclaimed actors and by top-name directors, as well as by up-and-comers and tomorrow's stars. Among the highlights are "Lynch" which takes an unflinching behind-the-scenes look at the life of acclaimed and enigmatic director David Lynch, and a sneak preview of director Alek Keshishian's "Love and Other Disasters," starring Orlando Bloom, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brittany Murphy. Numerous actors, directors, and crewmembers from the festival films will be on hand to discuss their work.

The Festival this year is anchored by a tribute to the actor Michael Keaton on April 12 at Sebastiani Theatre. Keaton, who has long been one of my favorite actors (and not just for being the best of all the Batman performers), will be on hand for the celebration to discuss his body of work as well as his directorial debut in the film "Merry Gentleman." In a whimsical twist, the festival will also screen "Beetlejuice," arguably the actor's most overlooked but complicated and inspired performance.

So it's Movie Night again in Sonoma! And you can't use the I-can't-get-babysitting excuse. Netflix will be there when you get home. See you at the Festival.

Ticket options include $10 door tickets, $60 all-day passes, plus all-week festival passes, VIP premier passes, and VIP all-access patron passes. To purchase tickets, and for complete film listings, screening times, events, child-care and celebrity appearances, visit www.SonomaFilmFest.org, or call (707) 933-2600.

To reserve a spot in advance for "Kid Zone!" Take 1
The screening's not until 3:30pm, so why not start your day with a late brunch at Sonoma favorite the girl and the fig (www.thegirlandthefig.com). Located on the northwest corner of the plaza inside the vintage Sonoma Hotel, this critically acclaimed eatery shuns frills while embracing local ingredients - in doing so scoring serious points with no-fuss foodies. Splurge on the likes of duck confit and potato hash or stick with updated favorites like poached eggs paired with Niman Ranch ham and red bliss potato home fries.

Those with a soft spot for cheese will score with selections from the spot's "Salon de Fromage," a superbly edited collection of cheeses from both local and international purveyors. We highly recommend trying the "The Cheese Monger's Whimsy," a selection of cheeses chosen by the on-staff cheese specialist (AKA "Cheese Monger") and complemented by the girl & the fig's FIG FOOD, a line of condiments specially tailored to pair with - you guessed it - cheese. Wash it down with a bottle of local, hard-to-find Unti Grenache, then amble over to the Hollywood & Vine Theaters a few blocks away to score a great seat for the afternoon show.

Take 2
Directed by Will Geiger and featuring "rising star" actors Max Minghella and Blake Lively (star of The CW Network's smash hit series, Gossip Girl), Elvis & Anabelle is a charming film that chronicles the adventures of two unhappy youths who meet under the strangest of circumstances (and we do mean strange) and embark on an life changing journey of self-discovery and love.

At once touching and uplifting, the film explores timeless themes of family duty, young love, life and death, and friendship, all against the backdrop of stunning cinematography and a captivating soundtrack. Watch for powerful supporting performances by Hollywood stalwarts Mary Steenburgen and Joe Mantegna in this riveting independent film that's been dubbed "a West Texas gothic love story."

Be sure to arrive early and say 'hello' to WineCountry.com founder Heidi Paul who will be on hand to introduce Mr. Geiger. A proud sponsor of the Sonoma Valley Film Festival for years, WineCountry.com has selected Elvis & Anabelle as this year's 'Tribute' film.

Take 3
When the show's over, meander back to the Plaza to peruse the charming shops lining its periphery or enjoy a cocktail at The Swiss Hotel or local favorite Steiner's Tavern (don't miss the juke box). If you've got room - and we hope you do - we recommend ducking into nearby El Dorado Kitchen for dinner. At this spot conveniently situated just across the street from the girl & the fig, Executive Chef Ryan Fancher - who cut his teeth at The French Laundry and Auberge du Soleil - prepares a host of dishes that strike just the right balance between simple and sophisticated.

Tuck into the likes of Fancher's truffle risotto or Basque bouillabaisse fireside in the chic spot's lobby (it's located inside the minimalist cool El Dorado Hotel), underneath a fig tree in the garden courtyard or in a private poolside cabana. No matter where you indulge, we're sure you'll find the spring-in-Sonoma weather enchanting, and the evening the perfect nightcap to an epicurean cinematic splurge perfectly fitting your wine country experience.

most kids feel on a first visit to Disneyland. And while the pursuits in this
storied wine region are of a decidedly adult nature, they've been known to
inspire the kind of sheer enjoyment that's nothing short of ageless. Read on for
the lowdown on the top spots and activities we think any first timer should
experience on a maiden voyage to Napa.

We've even included a fairy tale castle for good measure.

Ground Zero, Napa Style

f there's a single spot that can legitimately claim to be the seat of Napa's
20th Century rise to global wine fame, it's Robert Mondavi Winery (robertmondaviwinery.com ) in Oakville. Founded in 1966, the
striking Mission-style structure recalls early California architecture and
offers a full slate of tours, concerts and tastings throughout the year. Call
ahead for guided tastings and tours, and also for large groups.

Latte Luxury

A trip to Napa wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Oakville Grocery
(oakvillegrocery.com ), situated just south of Mondavi at the
Oakville Crossroad on Highway 29. Drop into this exceedingly cute country store
for a latte and a copy of the New York Times before tasting in the
morning, or pick up a selection of artisan cheeses and a gourmet boxed lunch for
an unforgettable midday picnic.

Mansion, Ho!

Beringer Vineyards' (beringer.com ) historic Rhine House - with its dramatic
Victorian façade, elaborate gardens, breathtaking stained-glass windows and
extensive interior wood paneling - is a must-see for both wine and architecture
buffs. Guests are encouraged to explore portions of the 17-room mansion between
pours in the winery's tasting room, located on the ground floor.

Perfect Perch

Grab a gourmet bite between winery visits at the luxe Auberge du Soleil, a
wonderfully well-appointed Relais & Châteaux inn built on terraces in the
hills east of Rutherford. Visitors in the know enjoy the spot's award-winning
cuisine and international wine list from the patio, which overlooks the Valley
floor below and the inn's lush grounds dotted with Mediterranean-style
bungalows, a large pool and meandering olive trees.

Italian Renaissance

The 107-room, 121,000 square-foot Castello di Amorosa (castellodiamorosa.com ) in northerly Calistoga took 12 years
and an estimated $30 million to build. Fashioned after a medieval Tuscan castle,
the wow-worthy spot boasts four levels, including a dungeon with authentic
torture equipment purchased in Italy. A tour and tasting takes approximately an
hour and a half, and visitors are accepted by appointment only.

Napa, Circa Now

Completed in 2001, COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts
(copia.org ) is a must-see for
visitors looking to explore Napa's bounty in a sleek modern facility. Located in
downtown Napa, the $70 million 80,000 square-foot facility offers interactive
multi-media exhibits about food and wine, cooking demonstrations, wine tasting
classes, a rotating roster of exhibitions and the much-hyped Julia's Kitchen at
COPIA restaurant.

Bubbly Basics

Every Napa trip should include a stop at one of the Valley's several
outstanding sparkling wine producers, whose unique wines demonstrate Napa's
renowned vinous diversity. At Domaine Chandon (chandon.com) in
Yountville, the dramatic foliage-draped archway outside is a fitting prelude to
the spot's lauded Champagne-style sparkling wines, while the table service at
Mumm Napa (mummnapa.com) is a
hospitality high note on any visit.

<Tee time=""></Tee>

Tee Time

An avid golfer's visit to Napa wouldn't be complete without playing a round
on one of the two, award-winning 18-hole courses at Silverado Resort (silveradoresort.com).
Situated on 1,200 acres of rolling hills in the southern part of the Valley,
Silverado also comprises tennis courts, a spa, a restaurant and a lounge in its
postcard-perfect 1870s manor house - affording plenty of activity options for
non-golfing companions.

Alfresco Agenda
Weather permitting, a picnic is the perfect way to celebrate Napa's stunning
natural beauty. Travelers looking for a low-fuss lunch will find everything they
need - including food, wine, outdoor seating and eats from nearby Dean &
Deluca - at Flora Springs Winery (florasprings.com) in St. Helena, while those who pack their
own provisions may prefer to dine at Rutherford Hill Winery (rutherfordhill.com), which
boasts extensive grounds with sweeping valley views.

Panorama Extravaganza
Visitors to Sterling Vineyards' (sterlingvineyards.com) spectacular Mediterranean-style winery
in Calistoga get there via aerial tram, which offers jaw-dropping vistas of the
Valley. The $15 ride is one of the most talked-about excursions in Napa, and
culminates in a tasting in the winery's panoramic tasting room. Self-guided
tours are also available, and a special Reserve tour and tasting is offered
daily by appointment at 11am.

had been some time since I visited Lodi. And so it was on a recent drive
through the once-slumbering farm town that I was truly amazed to see the
growth. But it wasn't just the growth of the town itself that caught my eye -
complete neighborhoods now stand where I recall from previous visits only open
fields and farmland. No, I was also quite impressed to see the incredible
amount of vineyards seemingly everywhere I looked.

Of
course, I have long been aware that Lodi has grown grapes and has for decades
been an important California wine-producing region. But really, if you haven't
been for awhile, you will undoubtedly be surprised to see just how important
Lodi has become. Indeed the Central Valley entirely has accelerated its
wine-related farming, and as the wine-buying world has taken the region more
seriously, so too has the region itself been taking itself more seriously. An
indication of the phenomenon can be seen not just in the amount of grapes being
grown in the area, but also in the quality of wine being produced. Among the
more than 40 wineries thriving in the San Joaquin Valley is a growing number of
boutique-style wineries. From the Lodi AVA alone, there are dozens of wineries
making a name for themselves around the world.

As I renew my relationship with the region, I'll continue to report on
the latest developments, and provide tips and my picks for the best wine
experiences Lodi has to offer. In the meantime, you can explore for yourself
and a great place to start is the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center, which features
a tasting bar pouring a huge selection of varietals from the area as well as
more information about the area than you can absorb in a single visit.

Let me count the (many) ways. If you think Napa Valley is a love-fest during harvest, you're right on one count. But my favorite time of year is actually spring - when the hills are emerald green and the wild mustard is in full bloom.

Mustard is a natural complement to grapevines, a nitrogen-boosting
cover crop that replenishes the soil while vines are dormant. The Napa
Valley Mustard Festival celebrates all that is glorious about Wine
Country in a typically quiet time of year. There are many festival
events to choose from every January, February and March, and in keeping
with our region's first-class reputation most of them involve food,
wine and art.

The best of all three is captured on the Mustard
Festival's Awards Night, hosted at a unique location each year. It's a
chance to rub elbows with Napa's most creative culinary talent,
indulging in everything from Duck with Mustard Greens to Profiteroles
with Mustard Essence - an acquired taste, but delicious!

Each
chef is tasked with creating a dish featuring mustard which can be in
the form of seed, powder, paste or produce. It's remarkable to realize
how many flavor profiles you can taste from a single food source. And
for the purist, there are over 50 different prepared mustards for
sampling, ranging from the classic to wasabi and ginger. As a major
foodie and former professional mustard maker, I'm especially fond of
those with a kick in their step!

The Awards event piece de
resistance: you are the judge - literally. There is a 'People's
Choice' competition for the best dish with flavor, presentation, and
creativity as the criteria. Winning entries have included Raviolini in
a Light Dijon Cream Sauce, Corned Beef & Cabbage Salad and Seared
Ahi with Mustard Brittle. (Check out the awarded recipes here )

Pair
the tastings and judging with Napa Valley's premier wines and some
heel-raising music, and you have the one of the most unique and
delicious events of the season. For information on coming Mustard

Fanfare and general bliss come next, followed quickly by the other big question - where should we get hitched?

And while this new question can give rise to a dizzying set of considerations for any couple, those inclined to a wine country wedding are faced with their own unique set of sometimes overwhelming options. Will any wine region do, or is there a special area we're set on? Will our guests be up for a destination wedding, and - if so - is there adequate lodging nearby to house everyone? And, of course, How much does a wine country wedding cost? Will it amount to more or less than getting hitched somewhere else?
