It's September. Labor Day has passed, along with the last "unofficial" day of summer and the long, warm days are waning. The nights are lightly chilled and the mornings are damp. The change is definitely upon us and the smell of autumn is in the air. In a land where sunshine and blue skies reign most of the year, autumn is one of California's most dramatic and colorful seasons.  Not just the landscape, but the wide array of fall crops make this a most special time to visit Fairfield's Suisun Valley.

Suisun Valley has a wonderful autumn season, coupled with all the fun and frolic of local pumpkin patches and Halloween merriment. For most visitors, October probably marks the start of the fall season.  And by October 1, Suisun Valley's season of harvest is in full swing. U-pick pumpkin patches, Indian corn, colorful fall gourds, crisp apples, and Fun Family Farm Days - harvest time is on sensory overload, visually and aromatically!

The splendor of autumn makes it an especially ideal time of year to travel in Fairfield, California's Suisun Valley; one of California's oldest standing viticulture and agricultural areas. A best kept secret of California, a foliage trip to Suisun Valley is one that's best suited to travelers who long to be away from the crowds.

Looking to celebrate harvest 2010 with rural scenery, friendly people, and hand-crafted food and wines?  Of course you are.  Curious about wines grown in appellations right next door to Napa Valley, which top out at around $35 per bottle?  If you're not, you should be.  Harvest season is the ideal time to find out what's going on in Suisun Valley and Green Valley, which lie immediately to the east of Napa and just off Highway 80.

If you could pick just one weekend, go August 14-15, 2010, when a slew of free or nearly free harvest-themed events compete for your entertainment.  The award-winning Fairfield Tomato Festival begins at 10am on Saturday for two days of tomatoey delights.  Sample gourmet tomato products, ogle and taste more than 50 heirloom tomato varieties, shop for locally grown produce, and compete for cash prizes in the tomato eating contest.  Tons of free rides and activities are also on hand to occupy kids less enthralled by the tomato gluttony.  Admission is free to all.

ART GALLERIES
 
Visit galleries and museums in Fairfield that feature artists from the local community. Spend your Friday evening at the Art Explosion Gallery where they host "Art Jams" every first Friday of the month where you will meet artists, enjoy music, and of course gain an appreciation of art. Each event has a different them and artists and guests are encouraged to come in costume! 

Finally, located in downtown Fairfield is the FCCA Gallery (Fairfield Center For Creative Arts) and they offer ongoing exhibitions free to the public throughout the year. The 47th Annual Juried Art Show is already in full swing and lasts through March 27, 2010. Over 250 pieces of art (various mediums) were entered from artists all over Northern California. A jury of three professionals from the Bay Area and Sacramento arts community selected 122 pieces to showcase. The Gala Reception and Awards night already passed, but there is still plenty of opportunity to view the art!

Art on the Vine (AOV) - June 5,6, 2010
Always held the first  weekend in June and open to the public, this spring art festival features original visual art and sculpture pieces from local and surrounding Bay Area artists. Spend a sunny day viewing art, nibbling on delicious food, tasting award-winning wine of Wooden Valley Winery, and enjoying live music. Festival is free to the public.
