A Free, Self Guided Fine Art Discovery Tour

Every fall, when trucks bearing tons of grapes appear on the roads of Napa Valley, the sun-drenched trees begin to show their fall colors, and the hottest days of the year roll through the gorgeous valley, it's the season for artists to throw open their studio doors and welcome friends, neighbors, and visitors into their creative workspaces for the annual Open Studios tour.

Arts Council Napa Valley's Open Studios is a free, self-guided fine art discovery tour that runs during the last two weekends of September.  The 2009 Open Studios Honorary Co-Chairs, Eleanor Coppola and Kathryn Hall, invite patrons to experience this year's tour, featuring 88 of the finest artists and craftspeople in the Napa Valley.

Whether you are an avid collector or just curious about art, Open Studios is an incredible opportunity to peer into the creative spaces of Napa Valley painters, metal and stone sculptors, mosaicists, photographers, ceramists, printmakers, fiber artists, jewelry makers, glass artists and other fine craftspeople, and to buy local art right from the source.

The Open Studios Preview Reception and Fundraiser is on Friday, August 28th from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Mumm Napa's Fine Art Gallery, 8445 Silverado Trail in Rutherford, California. The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to meet the talented participating artists, preview their work, sip delicious Mumm Napa wines, and plan your personal Open Studios tour. The Reception Exhibition features the work of 88 artists juried into this year's program. Tickets to the reception are $15 and are now available at Brown Paper Tickets.  Tickets may also be purchased at the door. 25% of all proceeds from the sale of art at the reception benefits Arts Council Napa Valley and future Open Studios tours.

nvOpenStudiosBeverlyW.jpg"The Open Studios program has offered me the unique opportunity to personally discuss and share my creative process with interested art lovers," says Beverly Wilson, local artist and longtime Open Studios participant.  "Visitors gain a much better appreciation when they see a glimpse of how and where the art was created rather than simply viewing the finished works on a gallery wall."

This year's program features both seasoned and new artists, from emerging sculptor/potter Sarah Brown to nationally celebrated painter Beverly Wilson to internationally known glass and steel artist Gordon Huether, all of whom went through a rigorous jury process to be accepted into the program.  Many artists will have demonstrations at their studios, from glass blowing to group murals to jewelry making.

Open Studios is an unforgettable journey of discovery and creativity in the Napa Valley. Patrons are encouraged to come for the art, but stay for the experience. Most importantly, patrons are encouraged to show support for the thriving arts community in the Napa Valley, and help make Open Studios possible for years to come.

nvOpenStudiosPlate.jpgOpen Studios runs during the last two weekends in September, the 19th & 20th and 26th & 27th. The Open Studios Exhibition runs at Mumm Napa from August 28th to September 10th.  The Closing Celebration will be hosted by HALL Winery on September 27th. "A community is only as vibrant as it's culture. Open Studios make it possible for all of us to meet our local artists and experience their creative process. Don't miss this opportunity!" - Eleanor Coppola, 2009 Open Studios Honorary Co-Chair
