Gloria Ferrer Catalan Festival

|
A Spanish Heritage of Wine, Music and Food

Transport yourself to the beauty and culture of Spain without the expense! Visit Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards this summer, July 19-20, 2014, for their annual Catalan Festival. This two day celebration was established by the Ferrer family of Spain to honor the opening of Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards in 1986, the first Catalan-owned winery in California.

Each day of the lively festival, guests will stroll Las Ramblas, replicating Barcelona's popular main street filled with the colors, smells and sounds of Spain.  Along the way they will sample savory tapas, enjoy paella and cooking demonstrations, and participate in educational seminars, cocktail demonstrations, food & wine pairings and a festive grape stomp.  Acclaimed Gloria Ferrer Carneros sparkling and estate varietal wines, as well as select wines from the Ferrer family's Spanish wineries, will be available for sipping.

Those captivated by the mood may also learn to dance the traditional Sardana or learn about Havaneras. This year, music and entertainment will be provided by Makru Music and Sol Flamenco.  Finally, each year the handmade artistic replica of the Gegants de Mataró made specifically for Gloria Ferrer is presented during the festival. These 15-foot-tall paper mâché figures represent the Catalan Medieval King & Queen and are traditional to every Catalan town festival.

Tickets range from $60-90 per person and are on sale now at www.gloriaferrer.com or call the winery directly at (707)933-1917. The winery is located at 23555 Carneros Highway in Sonoma Wine Country. This is a popular event, so buy your tickets early!

Family Winemakers of California Tasting Event

|
familyWinemakersCalifornia_billboard_073013.jpgIt's one of the largest and most comprehensive wine tasting events featuring California wines! This year's Family Winemakers of California event, held in San Francisco on August 17th, 3-6pm, promises to be even more exciting with over 250 wineries from 20+ California appellations pouring over 35 varietals and 800 different wines.

What makes this event even more special is that you will have unlimited access to sample wines from small-production wineries (under 500 cases) represented by the family members themselves. In addition, several wineries will be pouring at the event for the very first time, so if you're a repeat attendee, you'll have the opportunity to taste wines from the "new kids on the block".

Your admission includes unlimited access to all wines, commemorative wine glass, a variety of cheese and crackers, and on site food vendor. Plus, you will be able to buy and ship wine directly home from the event; several wineries are planning to offer special pricing on shipping and/or select wines. Tickets are $70 and well worth the price. Buy tickets online here!

Open daily 10am - 4pm, by appt only

Vine Cliff Winery, located in the Oakville appellation of the Napa Valley, has announced a new program to allow consumers to tour the winery and taste their wines with winemaker Jim Kress.

"We are very pleased that our guests will have this opportunity," said Rob Sweeney, Vine Cliff's Proprietor and General Manager.  "Jim is a great guy, and what could be better than tasting our wines with one of the key people responsible for making them?"

Kress joined Vine Cliff prior to the 2011 harvest. He  has 16 vintages under his belt having worked previously at St. Clement Vineyards and Domaine Chandon. After graduating from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, Jim's passion for food and wine eventually led him to the Master of Science program in Viticulture and Enology at University of California, Davis.

"I am excited to have the chance to share our passion with Vine Cliff's guests ," Kress said.  "We'll check out the production area, kick some dirt in the vineyards, then relax in the caves and try some wines. It should be a lot of fun!"

Relax . . . with a Glass of Wine

|
There's no need to rush through tastings or cram all your wine tasting into a 10am - 5pm time frame. More and more wineries are starting to offer evening tasting room hours and it's just what the doctor ordered!

Tamber Bey
Arrived early for dinner reservations? Checked in to your hotel from an evening flight and would like to unwind before heading to bed? Tamber Bey's tasting room in downtown St. Helena is the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine. Not only do they offer their full flight of tastings until 8pm daily, they are one of the few tasting rooms that have a license to serve wine by the glass. With dimmed lighting, and soft jazz notes floating in the air, and of course, amazing wines, you'll wonder why you didn't discover this gem earlier!

tamberBey_space.jpgThe Space
Tamber Bey's tasting room reflects the equestrian influence of their namesake (Tamber Bey combines the names of the first Arabian horses that Tamber Bey owner Barry Waitte owned and raced -- Tamborina and Bayamo affectionately known as Tamber and Bey.).

There are several different areas to taste within the Tamber Bey tasting room - a different space to fit your mood. Slide up to the tasting bar finished in copper or lounge on one of the leather couches. On a warm summer day, sit bistro style at the small tables outside or taste in the private tasting room with at a striking 100 year-old barn-wood table. Whatever you fancy and wherever you are comfortable, the tasting room staff is there to accommodate.

The Summer Grilling Wine Guide

|
grilledSteak.jpgSummertime . . .and the grilling is easy. The long, warm days of summer are reason enough to fire up the grill - or barbecue - and enjoy some of the tastiest food on the planet with family and friends. Serving a good wine with fare hot off the grill turns dinner into a feast to be savored and making a good wine match is easy if you know how.

Making that good wine match begins with knowing the food to be grilled. While grilling imparts smoky, caramelized flavors, it is - with a few major exceptions - the food's intrinsic character that suggests good wine choices. As with most wine and food matches, the key is to select a wine that both complements the flavor and approximates the flavor intensity of the food.

For example, grilled steaks offer rich, hearty, mouthfilling flavor that pair well with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which offer similar richness, heartiness and depth; Kenwood Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, Kenwood Jack London Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Valley of the Moon Sonoma County Syrah and - for more smoothness and complexity - Valley of the Moon Cuvée de La Luna Red Wine are all terrific matches.

ST. HELENA, Calif. -- Freemark Abbey invites wine lovers on July 16 to join in a "Toast to 125 Years" as the winery celebrates 125 years in the Napa Valley. From 1 to 4 p.m., guests will enjoy past, present and future vintages of Freemark Abbey wines paired with small bites presented by Chef Cindy Pawlcyn. "The history that this winery has seen and been part of is incredible," said Ted Edwards, director of winemaking who has been with Freemark Abbey for 26 years. We survived Prohibition, participated in the Paris Tasting and have watched wine become an important part of American culture. "

A Winemaking Stroll Down Bennett Lane

|
By Robert P. Farmer

bennettLaneWinery3.jpgAlthough it was the birthplace of Wine Country as we know it today, Calistoga is often overlooked among the visiting public. Or, more accurately, it's not overlooked so much as it is not quite reached. Snuggled into the northernmost region of the Napa Valley, Calistoga frequently proves just a bit too far up along the lengthy, easily sidetracked winery trail of the Valley. Too bad. Because some of Napa's true gems await the tenacious traveler with the stamina - or planning foresight - to alight upon Calistoga.

One such gem is Bennett Lane, situated near the edge of the Mayacamas Mountains. Bennett Lane is not one of the household names associated with Napa Valley, but the still-young winery has quickly garnered a reputation as serious producer - earning especially high recognition for its cabernet sauvignon and for its tasty everyday varietal appropriately called Maximus. The vision of owners Randy and Lisa Lynch, Bennett Lane typifies the potential for high-caliber cab grown in the northern stretches of the valley - where warm summer sun and volcanic soil give the fruit a compelling intensity. Bennett Lane's winemaker, Grant Hermann, grew up in the area and learned at an early age the importance of sourcing local fruit and attention to detail when aiming for the sort of quality that he has achieved at Bennett Lane. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. In less than half a decade, more than a dozen Bennett Lane wines have earned 90-point scores from Wine Spectator, and the publication has twice given the Maximus Vintage its "outstanding value" recognition.

See the site for more details.

castelloDiAmorosa.jpgCastello di Amorosa
It's become one of the most popular attractions in the valley. One is sure to fall in love with this 13th century Tuscan style castle with the "romance of Italy and the wines of Napa". Guests and visitors agree - a tour is not to be missed. They include a tour led by a Castle guide, a barrel tasting, and complimentary tasting of current releases and range from $31 - $41/per person. Tastings alone range from $16 to $26 per person. Advance reservations are highly encouraged as the winery can get quite crowded throughout the day. And who wouldn't want to attend a party, gala, or other festivities at such an amazing winery. Be sure to check out their calendar for events held year round.
